Behind the Listing - Best of You

Here is the second in our "Behind the Listing" series where we learn a little more about employers who are advertising on otjobsaustralia.com.au. Let me introduce you to Best of You!

1. Tell us a bit about your practice. What do you do and who do you work with?

Best Of You came to life a year after the birth of our first child, as a way for my wife to return to the workforce on her own terms. She had previously worked in high pressure KPI environments with limited control over her caseload, so that way of working wouldn’t support our lifestyle anymore. Therefore, we started by supporting participants close to home and only accepting referrals in clinical areas that she enjoyed. Over time, we have steadily grown and the OTs we attract are often looking for similar things: flexible hours that work around their life and more control over their workload.

2. Where are you located and what areas do you service?

For face to face services, we mainly focus on Melbourne’s Inner and South East suburbs, in the NDIS and private space. However, we also offer telehealth which means we regularly support participants across Australia.

3. What makes your practice a good place to work? What do you offer your team?

The biggest thing is choice. Our OTs choose the type of participants they take on, the size of their caseload and the hours they want to work. Therefore, there are no expectations to build a caseload in areas you don’t enjoy simply because a referral has come through. We would rather grow a little more slowly so that we can keep a happy team.

4. What does supervision and professional development look like for your OTs?

All our OTs are experienced Senior OTs who work with us as contractors, so formal professional development is largely driven by the individual OT. What we can do is help create opportunities, so if one of our OTs wants to build experience in a particular clinical area, we actively look for appropriate referrals that can help them move in that direction. Additionally, we have deliberately built a small team of experienced clinicians with different backgrounds, so there is usually someone within the team who has useful experience to share.

5. What kind of OT are you looking for? What qualities matter most to you when hiring?

We are looking for experienced OTs who are comfortable working independently, but may want admin support and systems around them. We are quite open minded with clinical background but are looking for someone who is reliable, follows through on their commitments and takes ownership of the participants they are supporting.

6. Is there anything else you would like job seekers to know about your practice or your team culture?

We are deliberately not scaling quickly so that we can remain agile and adjust how we operate as the everchanging allied health space evolves. Therefore, if you’re looking for a large corporate environment, a heavily structured career pathway or a manager checking in on you every day, that’s not what you’ll find at Best Of You. Our aim is to create an environment where good OTs can have their voices heard and practice in a way that is sustainable for them.
